Slow Travel Umbria by Train:

Castiglione del Lago to Orvieto – 15 Days

  • Meander Castiglione del Lago’s medieval ramparts above Lake Trasimeno, explore the 13th-century fortress, and soak up lakeside views from ancient stone palaces.
    • Take the ferry out to the little island on the lake and follow walking trails to an ancient, frescoed chapel, then head to the shoreline for a fresh seafood lunch.
  • Hop the mini metro from the train station and dive into Perugia’s art collection, wander Etruscan tunnels, and sample chocolates in historic cafés.
    • Make a couple of day trips by bus to see these wonderful gems:
      • Step into a living medieval fair at Gubbio’s Piazza Grande and explore a 1st-century Roman theater carved into the hillside.
      • In Deruta, tour the oldest ceramics museum in Italy, then head to a family-run kilns crafting signature majolica ceramics and try your hand at painting a tile.
  • Visit Assisi’s masterpiece at the frescoed Basilica of San Francesco, before wandering the towns cobbled streets, tracing Saint Francis’s footsteps.
    • To enjoy a bit quiet devotion, take a walk from the Basilica to the Woods of St. Francis.
  • Lose yourself in Spello’s flower-draped lanes and ancient Roman gateways.
  • Sip robust Sagrantino wines amid the rolling vineyards around Montefalco.
  • In Spoleto, take an escalator to reach some of the town’s most famous sights. Then, cross its lively piazzas and wander down to the Roman theatre.
    • If you’re traveling in early July, check out the Festival dei Due Mondi when Spoleto fills with opera, contemporary dance and visual art exhibitions.
  •  Ascend Orvieto’s funicular and marvel at the Duomo’s multicolored mosaic façade, climbing the bell tower for sweeping valley views.
    • Take an underground tour through an utterly fascinating subterranean network of medieval caves, tunnels and Etruscan wells.
