Roads Less Traveled Italy

One of the highlights of our trip to the Veneto was the day we spent in Malcesine, on the northeast coast of Lake Garda. Coming from our Agriturismo stay at Montecorno Belvedere, which was in walking distance to the ferry at Desenzano del Garda, we arrived at the lovely little port of Malcesine. It’s hard to miss as you’re heading up the coast of the lake, as the Scaligero Castle in Malcesine is one of the most prominent sights in the distance. (If you arrive early enough in the day, or plan to spend the night, you can enjoy the small multi-media natural history museum there.)
Our goal, however, was to take the funicular up to the top of Monte Baldo, for a hike above the lake. Once we arrived and had a nice wander through the cobbled streets of town, we decided to grab some provisions for a picnic lunch on the mountain. We stopped at Fresco Natural Foods and found everything we were looking for – freshly made sandwiches, fruits and even bottle of wine. (Another option would be to arrive early and have your hike in the morning in order to relish a sumptuous local lunch at the water’s edge. Ristorante La Pace is a great choice here.)

The ride up the mountain is nothing short of breathtaking! The funicular runs throughout the day, and even with a line, it’s a pretty quick wait to get your turn. Make sure to bring a jacket and some long pants to change into once you get to the top as the temperatures are vastly chillier, and super refreshing on a hot day.
Once at the top, we set out on the trails heading south along the ridge of the mountain. We were not only struck by the majesty of the mountain itself, with herds of local sheep roaming the hills, but also by the amazing views around every corner. The trails were easy, and we were able to go a fair way in a short period of time. Finding the perfect lunch spot, we laid out of picnic and basked in the fresh, cool air and the beautiful natural surroundings.
Upon finishing our hike, we sailed down the mountain on the funicular (super fun). Once again aware of the change in temperature, we were glad we had brought our swimsuits, and immediately scoped out a little public beach with a restaurant nearby. After relaxing with a glass of wine, we changed and had a peaceful swim in the lake before catching the ferry to return to Desenzano. All in all, it was a perfect day spent between the lake and the mountains!
